Report from Baghdad

The brother is back in town after 4 months in Baghdad. He said that his time there was fairly routine; when he wasn't working, he ran and exercised alot. Indeed, his closest brush with death came from regularly running through an area where a lion was later discovered.

He said the area where he was (near Baghdad airport) was actually fairly quiet. There were occasional mortar attacks, but they rarely had any effect; usually, the guerrillas would fire one or two shots and skedaddle. And with all the ordnance that was being exploded by EOD, he said explosions were heard all the time, and they would often not find out about a real attack until several hours later.

He also said something interesting: The base employs Iraqis. He said there weren't many at first, but now they're everywhere. He said the villages near the base (right next to it, in some cases) were still off limits, but there were few if any attacks coming from them.

All in all, he painted a picture of a country slowly but surely recovering from the nightmare of Saddam Hussein. The damage is getting repaired, people are getting on with their lives, and things are improving (especially the economy; my brother read an article in Kuwait that said the Iraqis have bought virtually all the used cars in Kuwait). By this time next year, the change will be undeniable.

Of course, the Democrats will never admit it.

Um, actually I was in Iraq for three months and Kuwait for about three months before that. Unfortunately, those three months in Iraq were the hottest of the year but it was getting kind of "nice" when I left. Posted by: digrafid at October 8, 2003 10:50 AM
Picky, picky, picky. I'll tell Mom if you keep it up. Posted by: Captain Holly at October 8, 2003 02:48 PM
