Maybe if the movies were better...

Hollywood reels from box office slump

Movie fans are loving DVDs, but not theaters. Maybe it's time for a big change in movie viewing.

Maybe if the movie studios would put out decent movies, people would go to the theater. I've actually seen a few good movies this year, but most of what I see in the listings is pure crap. If studios would spend more time releasing smart films rather than "Monster-In-Law" or "Sahara" or "The Interpreter" or "Miss Congeniality 2" or horror movie remakes or poorly conceived movies based (loosely) on sci-fi novels or some crusade epic that no-one wants to see, more folks would go to the theater. Cut the formulaic crap and give us something real.

Something like "Kung Fu Hustle" for instance. Movie of the year in my book.

I don't think it is the movies as much as the crap that goes on in the theatres showing these movies. Prices are outrageous on tickets and food items, we have to sit through 15 minutes of commercials and trailers for OTHER crappy movies before the main crap feature begins, and the theatres themselves are usually crap. Matinees are all i go to now, and even then Laura and I usually have to deal with a bunch of high-school kids talking on their damn cell phones telling their friends what's going on. Sure, I can wait the few extra months for the release on dvd and enjoy it in my own home with beer!

Well said K-Dawg.

I do agree that prices have gotten out of hand. It seems that ticket prices were stable for a long time and now it seems that the price goes up a quarter or fifty cents every year. Having to pay that price and THEN sit through commercials is excessive.

I have to say though: I'm usually the @$$hole talking through the show. :)

I usually only bother going to the movies maybe once or twice a year, and only for ones I know are going to be worth it (got my tickets to Nerdfest '05, er, Star Wars already). It's simply not worth going any other time.

Captain Holly, I am not exactly sure the new Star Wars is going to be "worth it". I know the last two episodes have been flaming disappointments. Could they have been any more poorly written?? Star Wars, IMHO, went into a tailspin with the appearance of the first Ewok.

That's funny, Cap'n, but I had to hit previous a few times to get to the comic in question.

But I have to say..."I'll never join you!"
