The Ugly American

Gosh, he's dreamy. University of Colorado Prof Ward Churchill on 9/11.

As to those in the World Trade Center . . .

Well, really. Let's get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break. They formed a technocratic corps at the very heart of America's global financial empire – the "mighty engine of profit" to which the military dimension of U.S. policy has always been enslaved – and they did so both willingly and knowingly. Recourse to "ignorance" – a derivative, after all, of the word "ignore" – counts as less than an excuse among this relatively well-educated elite. To the extent that any of them were unaware of the costs and consequences to others of what they were involved in – and in many cases excelling at – it was because of their absolute refusal to see. More likely, it was because they were too busy braying, incessantly and self-importantly, into their cell phones, arranging power lunches and stock transactions, each of which translated, conveniently out of sight, mind and smelling distance, into the starved and rotting flesh of infants. If there was a better, more effective, or in fact any other way of visiting some penalty befitting their participation upon the little Eichmanns inhabiting the sterile sanctuary of the twin towers, I'd really be interested in hearing about it.

Damn that Bush administration and its suppression of free speech. Why the man can barely get speaking engagements these days. (lva)

First time visitor to House Hraka? Wondering if everything we produce could possibly be as brilliant/stupid/evil/pedantic/insipid/inspired as the post you just read? Check out the Hraka Essentials, the (mostly) reader-selected guide to Hraka's best posts, and decide for yourself.

I didn't think it was possible to tarnish the name, "Churchill."

Wrong again...

I wonder who manages Prof Churchill's retirement portfolio....

Posted by: James at January 27, 2005 03:39 PM

He's in the Ethnic Studies faculty.

Is anyone surprised that he's an utter imbecile on matters of economics or geopolitics?

(And "relatively well-educated elite"? Does that include the janitors and the bike couriers and, you know, the guys that aren't Evil Downpressors? [Heck, many of them weren't even White Devils!] Then again, he thinks that stock trading is really starving infants. Somehow. With White Man Voodoo, I bet.)

Particularly offensive was his comparing the victims to Nazis ("little Eichmanns"), particularly on the week of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Posted by: Orac at January 27, 2005 05:16 PM

But even in the right conditions, he definitely wouldn't participate in sending anyone to a gulag, because that would be going too far. Right? Right!

Sure, they were little Eichmanns. Why every one of 'em piled up a big pile of 6 to 8 million bodies, just like the picture immediately above this entry...

You detect a little fuming there? Shit yeah. That jackass pisses me off.

I knew roughly a dozen folks at the WTC including one guy who was a genuinely great guy, the heart and soul of any group he was in; and one flight attendant who had her throat slit was the sister of a close friend of mine. Had I heard Mr. Churchill speaking in person, I believe I would probably have gotten physical. That's before even considering the enormity of comparing innocent people, some of my friends and apparently (to me) decent acquaintences) to an engineer of the second or third most henious and evil genocide in history.

Words fail me...

Hamilton pretends to have been caught flat-footed by the controversy that has erupted, but there is really no excuse. Churchill’s record is well known, and as I’ve mentioned, these remarks were published one day after the attack on the Twin Towers. Either Hamilton did a poor job of vetting him before the invite, or they thought they could sneak this in under the radar, or they really don’t care what the public thinks.

More of Ward's greatest hits:

Ward Churchill calls for overthrow of America by force; "more 9/11's are necessary".

"One of the things I’ve suggested is that it may be that more 9/11s are necessary.

...I don’t want other people in charge of the apparatus of the state as the outcome of a socially transformative process that replicates oppression. I want the state gone: transform the situation to U.S. out of North America. U.S. off the planet. Out of existence altogether."
