I'm googling it now, but does anyone have a suggestion for an open source streaming media--audio and video--server along the lines of RealNetwork's Helix Universal Server for Red Hat Linux?
What I've found so far:
Icecast - audio streams only
Gini - no apparent development since May, 2003, so I guess another requirement is "ongoing development"
Unreal - Windows only
VideoLan - So far, so good..
Darwin - Open source, but appears to support only a limited # of file types. Offers web-based administration, whish is good, as all of our servers are headless, i.e. without attached monitors.
Updates: Icecast does appear to support video streams, as of version 2.2. Thanks, GkBoy
Darwin fails miserably on install, as it's built for Red Hat Fedora rather than Red Hat Enterprise Linux. I might be ablt to beat it into submission by install a number of beta RPMs, but I'd prefer not too. Be a easier to upgrade one of the idle Solaris 8 servers to 9 and try to install on that platform. This may be a problem with the other two packages as well, both of which appear to be built only for Fedora.
Later update, because I know you're all on tenterhooks out there: VideoLan is even worse. All three packages, including Icecast, require a--for RHEL 2.1, at least--bleeding edge beta version of glibc that conflicts with too much else on the system.
YADU(Yet Another Damned Update): Lookie what's Top of The Pops at Blogdex today....nope. still requires the gd conflicting glibc-2.3.3
