Calling A Spade A Sturdy Digging Tool Having A Thick Handle And A Heavy, Flat Blade That Can Be Pressed Into The Ground With The Foot

When we said we valued diversity, we meant your skin, not your mind

A radio talk show host drew criticism Thursday after calling Condoleezza Rice an "Aunt Jemima" and saying she isn't competent to be secretary of state.

John Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM in Madison, said in a phone interview Thursday that he used the term on Wednesday's show to describe Rice and other blacks as having only a subservient role in the Bush administration.
...
He said he was planning a giveaway on Friday's show of Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup. "I will apologize to Aunt Jemima," he said.

Imagine the foofaraw if a right-wing radio host had made the same comment.

Or if a conservative cartoonist had drawn this

Or if a conservative website was selling this

In some otherwise PC circles, it's still ok to be racist, as long as one's racism is directed at a minority individual residing on the conservative side of the political divide, and one doesn't go so far as to actually call the person a kike or a nigger. John Sylvester, Pat Oliphant and the "Fighting for Whitey" creator illustrate the divide perfectly. In their minds it is impossible for them to be racist as long as they don't actually state that "Condi Rice is a nigger."

However, implying that Condi Rice is a nigger, portraying her as a nigger, or employing a code term that would be obviously racist had it been spoken by a Kluxer are perfectly acceptable practices. Calling someone a "Likudnik" is the same practice applied to Jews.

It's not racism, it's "nuance."

Wow. Right on, my pale skinned friend. You uttered the truth that dare not speak its name.

You realize, of course, this will draw the ire of people for whom the mere mention of the N-bomb, even in a clinical sense, is enough evidence to conclude that you're hosting a barn raising for the local Kleagle this weekend... Oh well, maybe Sliver Irghts is interested in getting another flame war going...

Pat Oliphant has had the ability to make me glare with righteous fury with a single cartoon for, oh, years.

Sadly for him, it's righteous fury at his vileness, rather than at the target he thinks he's exposing.

This is exactly why i want Condi to run for president, it would utterly destroy their argument.

Posted by: Sully at November 19, 2004 03:41 PM

Even Russ Feingold (D-Wisc., for those keeping score) found the talk-show host's comments too much to take.

As for the parrot cartoon, however, I could go either way. A nonracist interpretation might be that Bush's new Cabinet picks are chosen for their ability to mimic the boss and tell him what he wants to hear, rather than inherent ability. That is, in fact, a trait that (so far) they all seem to share; Rice is merely the best-known of the bunch.

But I tell you, if I could draw and wanted to make that point, I think I'd try to do so in a way that couldn't be mistaken for minstrelsy.

I really hope Dr. Rice runs for President (or at least VP) in 2008. I would vote for her. She is truly an inspiration. That people like Oliphant choose to make fun of her shows how little their souls really are; as a woman and a multi-racial (I am Native American and white), I see Dr. Rice as a model of Manifest Destiny--the optimism that a person can be all they want to be, despite sex, color, or socio-economic class.

I guess by the same standard, Sylvester should've been calling Colin Powell an "Uncle Tom"?

Posted by: Kehaar at November 19, 2004 04:51 PM

Yes, and here in my town, we have Joan Baez performing a mistrel show, too.

Yes, the leftist has the idea that it is appropriate to express a nihilistic hatred for human life (which is precisely what the bigoted language does) when prompted by manifestations of oppression. In other words, the leftist takes his feelings of indignance and resultant nihilistic abandon as a barometer of the depth of the latest oppression. There is no reason in this putative barometer, but only sentiment, pure and simple. There is only: “When The Man does as he will, I feel loathing, hatred and nihilism.” There is no rhyme or reason here, no sentiment cultivated by self-control and scrupulous pursuit of the truth, but only hatred.

No one who loved decent people would be so profoundly mistaken about which people are decent and which indecent that he habitually heaped bigoted and hateful vitriol on the decent ones by mistake. No, all is not well in this putative champion of justice; he has nothing to do with justice. Bush Derangement Syndrome is a perfect example of this dysfunction. The murder of 100 million by such lefties in the 20th C. is another example. At bottom, leftism is simply a nihilistic personality disorder. Having no regard for liberty or the sanctity of the individual, its aspirations can have nothing to do with justice. Dressed up as "social justice" though they may be, these aspirations are nothing more than a hatred of those who flourish, such as Bush and Rice, and a desire to bring them down "by any means necessary," even mistrelsy.

Actually, he did call Powell an Uncle Tom, though that may not be in the orginal linked story.

You should include the Danziger cartoon too, even though it never ran but on the Web:\

I don't remember the name of the slave catcher in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" but Olliphant, Danziger and Trudeau serve that same function when any Black wanders off the democrat plantation.
