No Pal O' Mine

Paypal is threatening to shutdown the Daily Pundit's account for violations of the company's acceptable use principle

The Policy prohibits the use of PayPal in the sale of items or in support of organizations that promote hate, violence, or racial intolerance; items which graphically portray violence or victims of violence; or items closely associated with individuals notorious for committing murderous acts within the last 100 years. Further, PayPal prohibits a person convicted of a violent felony, or his relatives or associates, from using PayPal to benefit financially from the convict's criminal notoriety.

Perhaps the use of forceful language in defense of one's political positions is considered hate speech by the nervous Nellie’s at Paypal. If so, then I can only assume that a similar notice is now wending its way through cyberspace to the in-box of Atrios, as his language often makes Bill's seem temperate in comparison.

Or perhaps not. After all, despite its words to the contrary, Paypal seems to have no problem with pages devoted to;

1.) The collection of money intended for the relief of whites imprisoned for race and hate crimes

2.) The New Order Confederate Army - We are a White Pride organization dedicated to the original Confederate States of America. Our mission is the unity and purity our our white heritage. We train a military fashion in order to prepare for the pending race war. We are the militia that you have been looking for and we are seeking dedicated individuals in your area.

3.) The United Aryan Collage Fund, which I can only assume is devoted to enrolling White Supremacists into art school.

4.) The white supremacy group Stormfront - We accept well-concealed cash, blank money orders and online payments through PayPal. If you use Paypal, please mention the payment is for Presents for Prisoners, we have payments for many things going through this address. Please be sure to send us your name and e-mail address (or address) so we can enter you in the raffle! Please send all payments to:

Commenters at the Daily Pundit suspect that the letter was sent at the behest of someone on the other side of the political fence from Bill--which could well be true. Certainly at least one commenter at the Daily Kos has been urging people to do the same to Little Green Footballs now for a while.

The problem with Paypal is that it has an AUP that goes beyond simply banning the use of the service for criminal activity. Once outside of that area, the decision as to which sites are covered by the AUP is a subjective one, and thus inherently flawed. Thus a site like Bill's or...ours or any other site, left or right, can be seen as in violation of Paypal's policies. All some nut has to do is take the time to complain, and I know from experience that such nuts are more common than not.

Comments got the same letter. Both of them were linking the Armstrong beheading video. Someone might have reported both of them but it's not a left/right thing. Evidently PayPal considers beheading videos 'beyond the pale'.
