Don't Step in the Diplomacy

Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi comes to this country to address Congress, and describes the situation in Iraq as "a tough struggle with setbacks, but we are succeeding." John Kerry, diplomatic titan that he is, can't wait to call a press conference to blast the visiting dignitary. Said Kerry, with a long face:

"I think the prime minister is obviously contradicting his own statement of a few days ago, where he said the terrorists are pouring into the country," Kerry said. "The prime minister and the president are here obviously to put their best face on the policy, but the fact is that the CIA estimates, the reporting, the ground operations and the troops all tell a different story."

It's an odd thing to say by Kerry, that uniter of world peoples. But wait, it gets better. Kerry's "contradicting his own statement" claim referred to Allawi's September 19 comments on ABC's "This Week." As you can see here, Kerry quotes the guy out of context.

On "This Week" Allawi said:

"Foreign terrorists are still pouring in, and they're trying to inflict damage on Iraq to undermine Iraq and to undermine the process, democratic process in Iraq, and, indeed, this is their last stand," Allawi said. "So they are putting a very severe fight on Iraq. We are winning. We will continue to win. We are going to prevail."

It's simply unbelievable. A foreign dignitary visits the country -- a man with whom future diplomacy is inevitable -- and a presidential candidate from a major party uses the opportunity to misquote him and slam him in the press. It's so remarkably stupid, I had to read the article twice to make sure Kerry's wife didn't actually say it.

With this kind of sleazy misquoting, the strategy behind Kerry's campaign retreat in Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana and Missouri has become clear. He's conceding the presidential race, and gunning for Dan Rather's job.

Um, I tried the link that you provided and although it talks about Bush/Iraq/Saddam, I couldn't find the Kerry "Foot-in-Mouth" quote that you give. I did find this that says essentially what you did.

Sorry about not including HTML tabs.

Great way to try to get elected, insult the guy who you are trying to help put his house back together after helping to kick the bad guys out. Real nuanced.

Excuse me, but in case you haven't noticed, the bad guys have decided to camp out in the back room and are inviting all their friends over.

And then Dick "go F*** yourself" Cheney said he was disrespectful :)

So speaks the expert.

Right on Scorpio. Because telling a political opponent to get fucked, is just the same as making a speech systematically undercutting an ongoing war effort, and one of our allies in that war. !;-)
