Spam Wave

Comment spam, which had been quiescent for a time after I turned off commenting on all posts over a month or two old, suddenly surged today. I thought the timing suspicious, so I went back and checked the dates on the previous surge of online poquer, Russiam pron and levistra links.

Sure enough, they started pouring in the day after an Instapundit link, and petered out about 4 days later, right when initial link would have scrolled off Glenn's page.

If I'm right, the current run should end around the 25th. Anyone else noticed a similar spam wave after getting a link from one of the bigs?

It makes a kind of sense, I suppose, for comment spammers to troll the Instapundit links, looking for blogs with open threads to spam. Those that Glenn links to often must deal with an absolute torrent of it--no wonder Roger Simon started using TypeKey.

But, for the life of me I can't see how comment spammers make a profit doing what they do. In nearly every case at Hraka the spammed link advertises a "service" that maybe one person in a thousand would find alluring, inevitabley appears on an old post that's lucky to be read by more than one or two people a day, and rarely remains undetected for more than 15 minutes. Once it's discovered, I press a button or two and voila, it's gone forever. How on earth do the comment spammers make money doing what they do?

I wonder the same thing as I sift through the 300+ e-mail spams I get each day, then today I hear an NPR story about the hundreds of thousands of dollars the "Nigerian Spammers" are racking in with their "419" scams, and I can't help but think, Who could fall for such a thing?

Apparently, even thought you and I can't see it, there's money to be made.

Even without regular commenting on my blogs, they still use the e-mail forms on my web-pages to spam me.

Too bad the Bush Administration's Canned Spam Act made SPAM legal. It's painfully obvious that those at the top don't read their e-mail or our web-logs.

This guy is one of the reasons: http://online.wsj.com/article_email/0,,SB107930537384354969-IhjgINplaR3n5ypaX2HcKqDm4,00.html

The sad fact is that while most blogs I read are authored and frequented by intelligent people, a large portion of the Web is inhabited by drooling cretins barely capable of tying their own shoes. It's hardly surprising that some of these folks click on anything that comes along.

In my blissful ignorance, I figured the goal is to spoof Google - leave lots of links to their site lying around the web, and elevate their page rankings.

But I have never really studied the pages they link to, so I don't know if that might make sense.

The Levirtre spam petered out after a couple days, huh?

Heh.
