Ancient Of Days

Went looking for the lyrics to "Buddha Buddha," after pounding out the post below, and discovered, unsurprisingly, that they aren't on the web anywhere.

Why, one would think that the Golden Age of North Carolina Music was hardly remembered at all.

Kids these days--they got no respect for the old ways.

Buddha Buddha was first recorded when Parthenon Huxley was still known as Rick Rock, which is still a better stage name as far as I'm concerned. It was same compilation album as Don Dixon's Praying Mantis, which actually made the MTV rotation for a short time. That video was probably the high point of the Triangle music scene until The Squirrel Nut Zippers and Ben Folds Five came along a decade later.

It's a pretty simple song, but like most in my soundtrack, it hardly matters how complex the lyric is.

Everything I do,
Buddha did with love and
that's what I compare it to.
Try to rise above the petty things I run into
I think of love when I do everything I do

Chorus:
Buddha Buddha.
Fishing boats in the Greek blue sea go...
Buddha Buddha.
Enemy planes in the comic books go...
Buddha Buddha.
Young hearts when they fall in love go...
Buddha Buddha.

I live in a different world
of private solitude.
Where I always tell the truth,
but I'm lying to you.
Our worlds are the same--
hot dogs and jet black planes
the yin and the yang,
over and over again and again and again.

You can hear it here, for a day or so, until I remove it, or here if you don't have realplayer.

Parthenon got his start making posters for the Cat's Cradle, the music venue in Chapel Hill for most of the last 30 years. He's still around. If you'd like a copy of "Buddha Buddha" for your very own, try here. I'd get in Your Parlor, as it also has "Sputnik" on it, another track from the old Mondo Montage album.

First time visitor to House Hraka? Wondering if everything we produce could possibly be as brilliant/stupid/evil/pedantic/insipid/inspired as the post you just read? Check out the Hraka Essentials, the (mostly) reader-selected guide to Hraka's best posts, and decide for yourself.

You linked the wrong MP3. You got The Rainmakers and "Government Cheese". While that song is another classic, I want the real thing!

'scuse me. You got the right MP3, but the wrong Real Media file.

Posted by: Kehaar at June 29, 2004 09:53 PM

And I think you got some bad lyrics. I hear "Fishing boats in the Greek Blue Sea" and "Enemy Planes"...

Posted by: Kehaar at June 29, 2004 09:56 PM

Fixed. And you're wrong on the lyrics, though I don't know of a way to prove it unless PH himself steps in.

I think you've got another error. First line is: "Everything I do Buddha did with love and that's what I compare it to." Thanks for making the song available here--I lost my only cassette copy of it over a decade ago and have been missing it.
