It's good that were no unnecessary deaths and all, but why was this plane allowed to land instead of being shot out of the sky?

Robert Morrell wondered what was up after his Northwest Airlines flight touched down.

Nobody from the flight crew got on the intercom to welcome passengers to Rapid City, S.D. He looked out the window and saw barracks-like structures and military officials. And then the crew told passengers to pull down their window shades.

Turns out it wasn't Rapid City Regional Airport. It was Ellsworth Air Force Base.

From what I can glean in the story, the plane was authorized to be in Ellsworth air space while on approach to Rapid City, but didn't contact the Ellsworth tower until seconds before touchdown.

So from Ellsworth's post 9-11 point of view, a jet in restricted airspace suddenly veers from its expected flight path onto an entirely new (and unapproved) one, a flight path that takes it into the heart of the base--not to mention that the airplane's responses to queries about its new path are entirely unhelpful.

So the base......lets it land?

Were I an Al-Qaeda terrorist, I'd find that act enlightening indeed.

Actually probably several reasons the plane wasn't summarily shot down.

1) Squaking a valid Mode 3 transponder code

2) Ellsworth and Rapid City Regional aren't too far apart, and this was a regularly scheduled daily run. This actually has happened before, but it's been a while.

3) The article is a bit misleading, indicating they didn't talk to the tower till after touchdown - they had, in fact, been talking to USAF controllers already - when they checked into the airspace enroute to the planned destination - airspace entry isn't automatically granted when a flightplna is filed - it's done 'on the fly'.

4) As long as they weren't 'flying goofy' , i.e. basically on course (remember the two patches of concrete for handling airplanes are pretty close together - only about 10 miles if I recall) and at reasonable altitudes for the trip, it wouldn't have set off any 'alarms'.

5) By the time the plane was obviously off course, it would have been within 5 minutes or less from touchdown at Ellsworth. Short of having a Patriot battery or guys with manpads to shoot at it from the ground - well, you aren't going to scramble anything in that short amount of time for an air to air engagement. Besides, bombers (the type of aircraft at Ellsworth) make really lousy interceptor aircraft.
