The Saturday Poll

For those who oppose the idea of gay marriage in general--which of the following descriptions of same-sex union would be the maximum acceptable to you?

Conversely, for those who support the idea of gay marriage in general, which of the following descriptions would be the minimum you could accept?

Remember, this is not what you want in your heart-of-hearts, but what you would grudgingly put up with.

I'm not positive this poll does everything I want it to. If you can think of another way to slice the gay wedding cake, leave a description in the comments and I'll try to revisit this question again later.

First time visitor to House Hraka? Wondering if everything we produce could possibly be as brilliant/stupid/evil/pedantic/insipid/inspired as the post you just read? Check out the Hraka Essentials, the (mostly) reader-selected guide to Hraka's best posts, and decide for yourself.

You sort of need a button to tell if you are checking your minimum or your maximum, otherwise the results will be madly skewed with anti's going for states to recognize rights and pro's going to the opposite extreme!

who would put in a grudging lower point, but wonders how you would distinguish it from my best hope.

The intersenction of most I'd accept (red) and least I'd accept (blue) might show the intersection points at which reasonable compromise might be achieved. For me, neither one is the max possible.

Yea, but I couldn't figure out a way to do that.

I'm theorizing/hoping that a sort of bell curve might appear, pointing out a kind of coalesced view.

If I'm wrong--hell,it's just an Internet poll.

In any case, I think it's a question that hasn't been asked much, so I thought I'd see what kind of reactions it provoked.

How about two identical quizzes -- one a best hope and the second a least acceptable?

That would give you the range -- there would be some sort of reciprocal relationship between the two quizzes!

I understand that what most gay and lesbian couples want is not a civil union but a MARRIAGE--what they call the "M" word--and they want all that marriage implies for heterosexual couples. Conversely, it seems that most who are opposed to marriage of same sex couples oppose it primarily on the grounds that marriage is by definition a union of man and woman. They feel that giving that designation to same-sex couples somehow deminishes the sanctity of the word. Do you suppose that a compromise could be reached here?
Looks like what we need is just a new word--one that will satisfy the same-sex couple but not offend those who regard the word "marriage" as sacred. Any ideas? I suggest "sammarriage." We could say, "Hey, John and Fred just got sammarried."

I noticed that you have 8 variations on "same sex marriage is okay", and 1 on "change the Constitution". Hardly a valid poll, since you slant the questions to endorse one particular point of view.

All this is silly, anyway. Words have meanings, and trying to apply a word to something it isn't does not change the reality. You can call a dog a cow all you want---even make a law that says so---but Rover is still not going to give milk.

Whatever the assocation that two gays have, it isn't marriage.

You do forget the one option most favored by our betters, the cultural / media elite.

9. Gay marriage for everybody, recognized everywhere, preferably by a lesbian Catholic priest, conducted under the gibbeted body of any insanely bigoted troglodyte who opposes any of this in any way whatsoever.

I think you need to be fair, and offer that option, just in case anybody from a major network news staff stops by, or Justice Kennedy.

Surely your term would be sammarily dismissed, don't you think, Moms?
