Free Speech Blows

Yes, sad but true, there are times when the idea of having free speech afforded to everyone really blows. The story of Jack Trawick, 56, is one of those examples. Jack Trawick went to jail for kidnapping and murdering a 21 year old female (Stephanie Gach) from a Burmingham, Alabama shopping mall. He took her to a remote spot, beat her with a hammer, strangled her and stabbed her through the heart. He is now on death row awaiting his execution. The victim's family thought this might be the end of this story, but apparently it isn't.

Now some letters and artwork of Trawick's is appearing on the internet, mostly because of a pen pal of Trawick's who is posting (says he hasn't in over a year)the information. In these letters and on the website, Trawick writes about his former victims and what he did to them, even going so far as to taunt the victim's mother by name. Obviously outraged by this, the victim's family soon realized there isn't anything they can do about it.

I agree, something feels very wrong about this killer having access to the internet, and my first reaction was, "I realize he has the right to first speech, but does he have to given access to a computer." I now realize this is not a solution since most of the material has apparently been posted by the pen pal and not Trawick himself. Honestly, I find any insight into the mind of a killer to be somewhat fascinating, so I did peruse various sites as a driver-by slows down to view the pile up in the center lane (WARNING: SITE IS DISTURBING IN NATURE, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED).

As Americans, free speech is one of our best creations. It separates us from a large part of the rest of the world, and allows us to voice opinions about those things with which we disagree. Unfortunately, this same freedom is granted to people who kill young children and revel in the celebrity they get and the fear they are able to raise in others. Still, it is the right thing to do, and while Trawick has the freedom to post his morbid letters and artwork, we also have the right to ignore him.

As for me, I assure you that I will not be sitting outside of the prison walls protesting his death on the night of his execution. Instead I may pop open a cold beer, throw a party and say a short prayer for the Gach's......for I too have a daughter.

First time visitor to House Hraka? Wondering if everything we produce could possibly be as brilliant/stupid/evil/pedantic/insipid/inspired as the post you just read? Check out the Hraka Essentials, the (mostly) reader-selected guide to Hraka's best posts, and decide for yourself.

I'm doing a school project and I was wondering if you had any idea where I can find Trawicks website. I clicked on the link you provided but it didn't work. Thank you very Much

I'm not sure if there is another site. It is possible that the site was removed because of all of the press it has received lately. Sorry, don't think I can be of help with it. Good luck with the project.
