At The Movies With Ngnat and Daddy

Watched part of the Whale Rider DVD tonight with Ngnat, or rather I watched part while she ignored it entirely, preferring instead to color on the floor in front of the television while the movie played. For the best really, as the heroine's mother passes away giving birth to her at the very beginning, and I didn't exactly feel like explaining what was going on. She already has a dark enough view of the future, having told us on more than one occasion; "First you get married, then you die."

I've been tempted to respond with a hearty "Preach it, sister!" but suspect that would involve repercussions I wouldn't really care to suffer through.

Such as a devotion to free love or polygamy on the part of my offspring 20 years down the road, or worse. She could become a Baptist, for instance.

I caught the rest after putting her to bed. I had rented it from Netflix for the same reasons I had them send us Bend it like Beckham--we're raising a daughter. The more movies I can find featuring strong-willed, intelligent females in them, the better. I don't know that there's an overall plan in mind--it just seems like the right thing to do.

No, Legally Blonde II doesn't count, though Ngnat did like the outfits, from what her grandparents told me.

Great, just great. Next thing you know, they'll be showing her Klute.

The Sainted Wife seems less tense about the whole idea than I am, viewing my efforts to populate the house with independent female icons with some bemusement. After all, she already has what seems like every movie musical for the past 50 years stored under the bed. Come the right rainy day, she can just whip out The Unsinkable Molly Brown or Calamity Jane. To her my activities are...superfluous.

Still, we'll own Whale Rider and BILB one day, if only because I like them. Not one day soon, but in few years, when Ngnat can identify with them more. Both feature restrictive patriachs; I suspect the eventual awakening of each to daughterly qualities they had previously overlooked will appeal to the Ngnat at some point in the future.

This is what lies scattered around on the floor at present. See if you can guess which came from what parent.

Kiki's Delivery Service
My Neighbor Totoro
Spirited Away -- Not that she will watch it. She saw it in the theatre with me, and now just refers to it as "The Scary One"
The Sound of Music
Singing In The Rain
Sense and Sensibility
Rapunzel -- Yes, I know, Barbie bad. Barbie also saves herself from the wicked witch without the aid of the prinsome hance, something that can't be said for the execrable Disney version of Sleeping Beauty that occasionally haunts the TV set.
