The C:--Soon Not To Be

The C: drive on the main PC here at House Hraka is slowly dying. I just finished an emergency repair to the registry, but the O/S (Windows 2000) is having to check the file system with every re-boot, so I don't think it's long for this world.

Thank god for the other PC and the Mac laptop, otherwise it would be the Middle Ages around here.

Everything important is backed up, so that's not a concern, but what I'd like to do is to make the second hard drive on that machine bootable, so when the time comes and C: dies entirely, I can simply tell the box to boot from F:

I suspect, but do not know for sure, that I could just install Win2k on the F: drive, but that would require disks I don't have at the moment, and they would almost assuredly not be the same disks the O/S was installed from originally.

What I'm wondering is if there is a way to make F: bootable from within the Windows menu while C: is still functioning. The obvious way, copying the WINNNT folder over from C: to F: doesn't work, and I'm not familiar enough with the intricacies of Windows to think of any other way.

So, anyone? Bueller?

First time visitor to House Hraka? Wondering if everything we produce could possibly be as brilliant/stupid/evil/pedantic/insipid/inspired as the post you just read? Check out the Hraka Essentials, the (mostly) reader-selected guide to Hraka's best posts, and decide for yourself.

Not that simple, and maybe not do-able. The F: drive would have to be made Master, it would have to have a master boot record on it, and the volume would have to have the active bit set via fdisk. Then the computer _might_ point to a boot directory on it. Maybe. But then the O/S would note all kinds of "new hardware configurations found". Might not be worth it.

Oppressive and periodic re-installation of O/Ss builds character...

If you can lay hands on a copy of Partition Magic, I believe it will do the trick.

Not that I know anything about this stuff but, how about mirrored drives with hot-pluggable standby capability?

Posted by: Stephen at November 18, 2003 01:36 PM

I have tried this several times over the years, using Partition Magic and other apps. Net result has always been many hours of work...followed by installing a new C drive, re-installing the operating system, etc. repeatedly until done.

May I suggest the following: If your drive is going, the system is probably 18 months old. You can buy a NEW system with everything you need for about $500 and it will have Windows XP on it. If money is tight, get a refurbished system for about $350. Try Office Depot and start by looking at the E-systems.

This new system will probably have double the storage and speed of your present system.

Sorry, wish I could help, but I gave up IT work years ago. If I remember correctly, it was about the time my office converted from DOS to Windoze.

House Hraka? Is that anything like House Harkonnen?
