Spinning Up

Might get back to a more normal publishing schedule by sometime tomorrow, though the ideal publishing schedule has been put by the wayside for some months now---ever since the birth of Scoitty M, for some reason. Everything just got busier then.

I've spent the day catching up on the incredibly long list of work generated emails the piled up over the week I was gone. I'll do the same for blog-related matters tonight after the kids are put to bed. Everything should be back to more or less normal by Wednesday, I should think.

The fishing trip went well, though mutters were in heard in some quarters about a comparative lack of fish on this trip as compared to last years.

Which is unsurprising. Last year the majority of the group put shrimp on the smallish hooks and were happy with whatever showed up to bite it. This year we put chunks of mullet on larger hooks and went hunting for bigger fish.

So quantity suffered, though quality did not. We caught an average of one or two sizable fish a day, as a well as an incredible quantity of stingrays and skates, trash fish that are seemingly unavoidable when fishing the fish finder rigs most of us used.

When we did switch to a lighter tackle, towards the end of the week, we caught more fish. Threw most of them back, though.

The closest we got to a really large fish was the approximately 60 pound red drum Jawbreaker fought for an hour Monday night before having the fifty pound test leader line part as the giant fish made one last turn away from us, in the wash four feet away from the beach. According to the lady at the tackle shop, a hand on the leader technically counts as a catch in N.C--she was perfectly willing to write out a citation for the drum on our say so

Jawbreaker turned her down, feeling that he should at least have touched the beast itself to count it as a catch.

Five years he's come on this trip with a citation drum in mind. A week ago he was four feet from his goal, and one fishy shrug on worn monofilament later the dream was as good as gone.

Next year.

those who complained about not catching enough always have the option of staying home next year, actually GOING out to the beach, or bringing cane poles and fishing for the smaller stuff that attacks our larger chunks of bait. if that doesn't satisfy the complainers...screw them!
