Back Seat Gamer

Working from home today, as Scotty M has his final hernia surgery checkup this morning. I'm to oversee the Ngnat while this is going on. Sainted Wife took her with them for the previous appointment; learning enough during the visit to know not to do it again. When the doctor came in, Ngnat jumped up on one the examining room chairs and sang a selection of tunes from The Sound of Music, seemingly with the aim of convincing the pediatrician that not only does she not get enough attention at home, we sit her in front of the television for hours at a time.

Which isn't true. Why, there are lots of times we just sit her down in front of the computer monitor instead.

By the way, Scotty's hernia surgery? Eight thousand dollars, most of which is covered by insurance, thankfully.

While her mother and brother are off at the clinic, Ngnat is in the master bedroom, trying to play Tetris on the Nintendo I pulled out of the attic last night in preparation for the neighborhood garage sale tomorrow. From her point of view, the goal of Tetris is to pile all the blocks on top of one another, which makes for a pretty short experience.

I made the mistake of letting her get out of bed to watch me test the various games last night, and now she won't stop begging to play them, or preferably, for me to play them while she sits in my lap and offers helpful suggestions. What she really wants is for me to play Lemmings on the Super NES the rest of the day, or Swords and Serpents on the older box. I've never seen a child as excited about slaying poorly rendered digital spiders as Ngnat was last night. She was literally dancing in front the of the bedroom TV, frantically pushing the buttons on the secondary controller I had given her. She figured out almost immediately that "gold pieces" meant money, how I have no idea, and after that showed the electronic monsters no mercy.

All I could think of was "Where were the girls like you when I was doing this for 8 hours at a stretch?"

I have explained to Ngnat that UNC really doesn't consider Nintendo testing to be part of the job of system administration, but so far that explanation hasn't sunk in. She, like her mother before her, just assumes I'm futzing around to no purpose when in front of the monitor.

How the females in my life came by that impression I will never know.

First time visitor to House Hraka? Wondering if everything we produce could possibly be as brilliant/stupid/evil/pedantic/insipid/inspired as the post you just read? Check out the Hraka Essentials, the (mostly) reader-selected guide to Hraka's best posts, and decide for yourself.

You're selling an original NES and SNES? What games? How much?

Lets see.

Tetris, Swords and Serpents, Mega Man 6, Wizardry, Jack Niklaus golf,
Shingen the ruler, Star Soldier, Nobunaga's ambition II

Super NES
Zoop, Ms Pacman, Nobunaga's Ambition(Lord of Darkness)

All work, and I've got more games around for both. I just need to find
them. The SuperNES has one fair controller and one that needs to be cleand
before it will work. The NES has four or five that work. Got power cords
for both, and one cable connector

Haven't decided on a price yet. Probably $20 for the lot.

Glad to hear that little Scotty's health issues are all taken care of, and that the insurance took care of it.
Now as for the story of Ngnat jumping up on to the chair and singing a selection of songs at t he Doctor's office - this is one heck of a funny story, and you ought to preserve it, so that you can embarass Ngnat when you become Grandpa BigWig!!!!!
