Powered Down

Well, we've survived Hurricane Isabel, or Hurricane Israel, as Tom Brokaw referred to it, twice, on the evening news tonight. Why, you'd think he had something else on his mind. Or perhaps he's of the opinion that the Jews control the weather.

"Moishe! Meryl's lawn is turning brown. What have we got in the area?"

We lost power for most of the afternoon, but that was the only affliction visted on us by the weather. Even that was worse than what most of the area got. We're connected to one of the more elderly parts of the RTP power grid; a stiff breeze is usually more than what is needed to knock it out.

Scotty M. slept most of the storm away. The infection in his hernia incision had completely disappeared by the time we called the clinic this morning, so all we have to do now is dose him with the Keflex three times a day and keep the cut open so it can drain for the next week. Now that the area isn't so inflamed he doesn't appear to mind us messing with it. Even my shoving part of a gauze bandage into the slit above his navel is met with chuckles and grins. When Scotty laughs it's a low, coughing sound, which makes him sound a lot like an infant version of Butthead.

While he slept, Sainted Wife, Ngnat and I sat in the loveseat in the garage under an afghan and watched the storm, drinking wine and picking at a lovely Ngnat-supplied repast of Wheat Thins, Hershey Kisses and strawberry Pop-Tarts. Ngnat drank orange juice, albeit from a wine glass, finding the sweetish riesling in ours an uncomplimentary match when served with Pop-Tarts.

She did like making toasts, offering one up every minute or so in the course of downing an extraordinary amount of oj.

"Cheers!" She would say, clinking each of our glasses in turn. Or, "To the wain!"

Eventually she became inured to the novelty of sitting with Mommy and Daddy in the garage and sipping out of a glass made out of real glass. She settled down, and we all leaned back under the blanket, watching as the clouds zipped by and gusts of wind tossed leaves down into the street. An errant plastic milk jug bounced down the asphalt towards us, pushed by the wind, and the occasional late season hummingbird zipped by on the way to the feeder whenever the gusts quieted down.

Then the lights came back on.

"Yay," said the Ngnat. "Let's go see what's on TV!"

First time visitor to House Hraka? Wondering if everything we produce could possibly be as brilliant/stupid/evil/pedantic/insipid/inspired as the post you just read? Check out the Hraka Essentials, the (mostly) reader-selected guide to Hraka's best posts, and decide for yourself.

BigWig, I sure am glad that Scotty is doing well and is recovering from the post-op infection. Also am glad that all 4 of you were not affected by Hurricane Isabel. Please convey my best wishes to SW on her bereavement

The Jews control the weather, eh?

That'd explain why you always hear about goyim joints like trailer parks getting wiped out, but you never hear about a kosher deli getting picked up by a tornado, and deposited intact on a hog farm 10 miles away.

Glad to hear y'all survived the hurricane!

God must be a fan of CARNIVAL. :-)
