French Nazi's

I watched a special on the History Channel over the weekend. It was about Hitler and his rise to power. It was pretty interesting, if you like that sort of thing, and I couldn't take my eyes off of it. Of all the interesting topics they discussed, one particular event caught my attention.

The 1936 Olympics were held in Germany, 2 years after Hitler's rise to ultimate power in that country. As the Germans paraded into the stadium they, of course, gave him the famous stiff-armed salute. One other country did the same thing, can you guess which country that was? France, of course. I didn't notice, but I bet you anything they were toting a white flag instead of their country's at the time. That was probably their signal for, "Hey, we know you are a bad dude, and we are going to surrender in advance."

Ya know, I'm glad you posted this. I was feeling sorry for myself for my pathetic life because I was inside watching the History Channel on a Sunday afternoon. I’m glad someone else saw it! The same scene you described stuck out at me and even gave me chill bumps. The sight of the entire French Olympic team dipping their colors to 'Dolphie, and giving him the "Heil" salute, was chilling and sickening… all the more so because nothing in France appears to have changed.

Apparently we both need some more excitement on our weekends.

If you ever look at turn-of-the-(twentieth)-century photos, you'll notice that the stiff-arm salute was the salute of choice in classrooms in the US, but that the hand-over-heart became popular when other countries screwed up the symbology.

Is 1936 tuurn of the Century? Regardless, it was intended by the French as a sign of respect and solidarity with Hitler. It makes sense with the way history played out ie the Vichy sympathizers and the Blitzsurrender of the North.

Woundwort:

It was raining here. Did you have as good an excuse?

Posted by: oceanguy at August 12, 2003 09:25 PM

Oceanguy, no, I don't have as good an excuse, so I will go with the rain as well.
