Stalking the AP

Got an email back from Bourzou Daragahi regarding my query as to the whereabouts of Donna Abu-Nasr, who has now gone 16 days without filing a story from Iraq.

Not sure who you are, but I've blind copied Matt Moore and Donna Abu Nasr on this email, and if they wish to, they can respond directly to your query.

Warmly,

Borzou

At present, neither Matt Moore nor Ms. Abu Nasr have responded to Bourzou's forwarding of my missive. Not that I blame them. I suspect Borzou thinks I'm a stalker, albeit one with something of a rarefied taste, and he could have communicated that misgiving in his forwarded email. He may be right. After all, who in their right mind goes to the trouble of tracing the activities of multiple overseas reporters via their collected bylines?

Of course, if one was going to do that, there's no reason to stop at just three AP reporters. With Google News, shouldn't it be possible to map the location of every AP reporter in Iraq, or the world?

How much do you think in might be worth to Reuters, UPI or one of the other international wire services to know exactly where AP has placed which resources within a day or two?

It may be worth nothing. I'm not known for my keen sense of business, but it seems like moderately valuable information.

In any case, finding an AP reporter is fairly straightforward, so I doubt I'll see a payday out of this. Every bylined AP story has "By So and So, Associated Press Writer" somewhere in the story. To search for all the AP journalists in Iraq, just run this search string through Google News. There's a middling rate of signal to noise, so it likely could be improved, but I still managed to find 10 Associated Press reporters other than the three listed above after looking through about 100 stories. Further searching on each name maps a reporter's movements over time.

1. D'arcy Doran is in Tikrit.

2. Jamie Tarabay is in Baghdad now, in Tikrit three days ago.

3. Bassem Mroue has been in Najaf and Baghdad in the last two days.

4. Steven R. Hurst is in Baghdad.

5. Niko Price is in Mosul.

6. Hamza Hendawi was in Najaf as of the 26th, and is in Baghdad at present.

7. Sarmad Jalal was in Mosul as of July 23rd.

8. Paul Haven is in Baghdad.

9. Sabah Jerges is in Baghdad.

10. Sameer N. Yacoub is in Karbala.

11. Suzan Fraser, who also files the occasional story on Iraq, is based in Ankara, Turkey.

As for the three original reporters, Matt Moore and Borzou are in Mosul, and Donna Abu-Nasr last filed a report on July 12th, from Baghdad.

Update: July 31st

Donna Abu Nasr has replied to my email. She's on vacation, which blows my otherwise perfectly nice conspiracy theory right out of the water.

Unless it wasn't really her that wrote the letter............

What is the story with Donna Abu-Nasr? Is she a Muslim? Her name implies so. I think we should find out who she really is and what the real deal is! Congrats on your efforts.
