Acute Otitis Media

My ear has robbed me of the ability to think, so instead of critically interpreting the news I'm just going to count words instead.

Today's Journalistic misspellings:

their - 148 instances.
seperate - 124 instances.
supercede - 43 instances.
Pheonix - 32 instances.
Isreal/Isreali - 39 and 3 instances.
Niagra Falls - 26 instances. Elderly honeymooners should remember to bring their Viagara.
cheif - 21 instances.
wreckless - 33 instances, though 3 refer to a nickname, so the usage is presumably correct. I especially like "Wreckless Driver Faces Sentencing"
San Fransisco - 22 instances. It's where I left my haert
Condolezza Rice - 28 instances.
consitution - 7 instances. You know, the one with the amedment.
gaurd - 5 instances.
Goerge Bush - 9 instances.
mute point - 5 instances.
twelth - 3 instances.

And of course, mispelled - 2 instances.

Update: I have swimmer's ear. Next thing you know my voice will start to break, then I'll get mono.

Anyway, once I've found something to occupy my time it's hard to get me to stop.

Febuary- 15 instances.
athelete- 5 instances.
Wenesday- 17 instances.
sophmore- 21 instances.
similiar- 90 instances.
foriegn- 24 instances.
corespondent/coresspondent/corresspondent - 12, 1 and 2 instances.

Ari Fleisher- 17 instances. He's the retiring Presidental Press Seceretary. Perhaps he can go work for Suprem Court Justic Rhenquist

And some usage errors
"its my"- 19 instances.
"it's own" - 196 instances.

First time visitor to House Hraka? Wondering if everything we produce could possibly be as brilliant/stupid/evil/pedantic/insipid/inspired as the post you just read? Check out the Hraka Essentials, the (mostly) reader-selected guide to Hraka's best posts, and decide for yourself.

To be fair, many of those are simply transpositions, and thus more likely typos than actual spelling errors proper.

Typos or not, they still should have run them against a spell checker.

Typos or not, they still should have been caught by an editor.

I'm just holding Journalism up to its own standards.

Also, this is what I do when I can't think of anything else. It's an anal little amusement, but it's my anal little amusement.

Posted by: bigwig at July 15, 2003 08:53 PM

my special amusement is homonyms --

your/yore
there/their
two/too/to
hear/here
red/read
reed/read
know/no

there are dozens of them, and all interchangable by the Marching Morons!

When I was in college, I had some contact with a Rastafarian who preached regularly about the Kingdom of Is Real. Perhaps this is what they meant.
