Unseen History: Ohrdruf 4
The Prisoner Beat His Brains Out With A Rock.

Note: An up-to-date list of all the Unseen History posts can be seen here, and will eventually be mirrored here.

For those of you happening upon these pictures for the first time, an explanation of how they came to appear on this site, as well as more information on the Ohrdruf work camp can be found in the first post in this series.

THIS PHOTO SHOWS: American soldiers and survivors survey the bodies of slain prisoners. The prisoners were too weak to leave as the Fourth Armored Division approached the camp, so the Germans shot them and left.

Notes: Colonel Sears, and two other officers, either colonels or majors, at the scene of the execution.

The coffee cup in the foreground, presumably the possession of a guard, suggests where the German firing line might have been. The prisoners would have been lined up, watching their one of executioners drain the last dregs from the cup before he dropped it to the ground, unshouldered his machine gun, and opened fire on them. Several must have tried to run. You can see how far they got.

Shortly after the discovery of Ohrdruf, Eisenhower, Omar Bradley and Patton were given a tour of the camp. Eisenhower mentioned it in a letter to George Marshall.

On a recent tour of the forward areas in First and Third Armies, I stopped momentarily at the salt mines to take a look at the German treasure. There is a lot of it. But the most interesting - although horrible - sight that I encountered was a visit to a German internment camp near Gotha. The things I saw beggar description. While I was touring the camp I encountered three men who had been inmates and by one ruse or another had made their escapes. I interviewed them through an interpreter. The visual evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty and bestiality were so overpowering as to leave me a bit sick. In one room, where they had piled up twenty or thirty naked men, killed by starvation, George Patton would not even enter. He said he would get sick if he did so. I made the visit deliberately, in order to be in a position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to "propaganda".

General Eisenhower listens to a description of Ohrdruf by a tour guide.

The man who led the generals' tour of Ohrdruf claimed to be a former prisoner, though it later turned out he was not, surprising considering his detailed knowledge of the camp. Patton later wrote Eisenhower about him.

It may interest you to know that the very talkative alleged former member of the murder camp was recognized by a Russian prisoner as a former guard. The prisoner beat his brains out with a rock.

Gosh, I wonder which prisoner that might have been.

The tour guide demonstrates methods of torture for Generals Patton, Bradley and Eisenhower.

No mention of whether the former prisoner was then chided for prolonging the cycle of violence or not.
