More Monsters of The Deep

MSNBC, among others, is reporting the discovery of a mystery giant of the deep, washed up on a Chilean beach

The dead creature was mistaken for a beached whale when first reported about a week ago, but experts who went to see it said the 40-foot-long (12-meter) mass of decomposing lumpy grey flesh apparently was an invertebrate.

''We'd never before seen such a strange specimen, We don't know if it might be a giant squid that is missing some of its parts or maybe it's a new species,'' said Elsa Cabrera, a marine biologist and director of the Center for Cetacean Conservation in Santiago.

Photographs showed a round leathery substance like a mammoth jelly fish, about as long as a school bus.

The mystery giant has been identified, as I discovered while searching the web for the picture mentioned in the article. According to the unchecked by MSNBC website for the Center for Cetacean Conservation, the giant sea creature ostensibly baffling Chilean scientists has been identified by said scientists as a giant whale penis.

Rough Translation: The male unit of 12 meters in length beached during the swell that affected the X Region. The Center for Cetacean Conservation traveled until the place of the varamiento to make inspection in land and to take samples from the unit which will be analyzed with the aid of the international scientific community.

It's likely that of the dad humpback whale it was found in association with, though it is four times the size of the equipment found on your normal humpback.

In case you're wondering, or need to know in order to avoid appearing ignorant at your next garden party, the proper term for whale penis is "dork."

I have of course written the Center for Cetacean Conservation begging for a picture of the record breaking humpback penis, which I'll add here if they send me one.

Update: The story grows slightly more confusing, perhaps due to the google translation of "El ejemplar macho" as "male unit". The Centro de Conservación Cetacea has indeed sent me a picture of the creature mentioned in the articles above, identified by them as a Giant Octopus.

I suspect those of you clamoring for photos of a 40 foot whale penis are doomed to disappointment.

NO WAY!!! A WHALE PENIS??? You have to post that pic as soon as you get it.

In the world of Cryptozoology this is very common. Usually they are called "Globsters". Check out this link for more information:
